...with a lot fancier words and bigger ones and in that accent which Americans associate with Oxford and Cambridge and therefore, intelligence (which might be a big part of the reason he transplanted to the US), Hitchens would say, in essence, what Nixon said after leaving office and being interviewed by David Frost a few years later. Frost was so taken aback that he put one question to Nixon a second time, and the answer was the same; Nixon believed that if the president of the United States did "it"..."it" could not be illegal. In other words Saddam can't torture people in Abu Ghraib...that's wrong and immoral and serves no useful purpose...but when white people take over the prison, they can torture and humiliate and even kill people, because they are white, they are the self-proclaimed "good guys" and so it can't be wrong or immoral or even useless. ..it HAS to be good, if we do it. That's what Hitchens would say after you brushed aside all the gingerbread. ...It is enough for Blair that he BELIEVES the world is safer, or it would have been far worse had Saddam remained in power...once again it is faith-based beliefs....all the hard evidence points to no god, but the religious BELIEVE otherwise, they don't need evidence, their beliefs are everything to them. Hitchens and Harris have that same faith-based belief in the STATE...in State Power...WHITE state power, that is, just as Chomsky said. Hitchens won;t believe the Bible, he sees no reason to, or evidence that would convince him of its veracity...but, HE did believe Bush...he had confidence and trust and every, what? "reason"?...no, every MOTIVE to BELIEVE in Bush and what neo-cons said they were about to achieve...and he went on believing when all evidence pointed to the opposite, just as the religious deny science when all the evidence points to scientific explanations of the natural world. When Americans torture and murder and steal, it is not the same as when others do these same things. Saddam fought one war, at a time when he was the ally of the US...and had we not wanted him to fight that fight, he would not have done it...same with the attack on Kuwait...he was given the go-ahead by the US...we WANTED him to do those "horrible" things so he would give us the pretext, the fig leaf for what we wanted to do anyway...when I say "we" I mean the small percent of neo-con Fascists who really decide these things, not WE, the dummies who actually think they represent us and not their own narrow interests and that our vote changes anything. How many wars and attacks and death squads has the US managed in that same time? How come we get away with it and no one else had better even try? Because we're stronger and white and that makes us right. But, history tells us that there will always come a reckoning, it always has and there's no reason to think it won't come again...maybe not in direct warfare against an equal adversary, but it will come. And there is solid evidence for THAT. --------------------- |
