...stand back in awe at the spectacle we make. We have no qualified experts among ourselves in our own history...I don't mean ancient history, but even there...for people so "proud" of their so-called ancestry we've only now produced ONE Assyriologist. As far as I know we don't have a single expert, I mean a legitimate one, in our modern history...in the modern history of the Middle East...which is where we come from. We have a lot of people who "know the truth"..mostly what they heard from their grandparents...but no one who's actually approached the field as a discipline...under the guidance of knowledgeable people who are recognized scholars in the field. The only one we have is Dr John Joseph...and look at what we've done to him...look at the names we call him and the real insults we hurl his way..the accusations and all. It's such a barbaric attitude to knowledge and scholarship and history... No nationalist, believing what his grandmother told him or, worse yet, what's written in self-serving Syriac manuscripts or hokey history books printed by Aprim and Rosie Malek, could get through an upper division history class...let alone get a Master's degree...or even think about a doctorate... believing all this nonsense, buying into what grandma said, results in a mind so lazy, so inept in reason and higher criticism as to render one incapable of making sense...certainly of treating history as a discipline and not pop-culture. Such people are extremely proud of themselves when they scorn books by "so-called experts" in favor of grandma. Yes, Christians suffered at the hands of Muslims...but why? Did Christians do anything to bring retribution on their heads? Syriac manuscripts won't mention it...they'll only say "we suffered persecution". Since before the Arabs came the battling sects of BetNahrain were blood enemies of each other...competing bishops with their retainers engaged in street battles with other congregations...they courted any power that would crush their co-religionists. After the Arabs came they turned on each other, ratting each other out to the caliphs...accusing one another of being enemies to the Arab state for being friendly to Rome. During the Crusades it was much the same thing...some Christians sided with the Euros..others fought alongside the Muslims...in the 19th Century they welcomed the Russians and British...took advantage of temporary gains by these foreign Christians to lord it over the Muslims...and paid the price yet again...same with the First World War...same with the Second World War...and now with Bush's war. The reality is that a small number of fanatical nationalists, hiding Jesus behind a flag, have ruined it for every Christian in Iraq. And they're still at it. --------------------- |
