About that guy who joined the Navy & who's interested in my friend:
He became nonhuman when he joined the military. Look at his lifestyle on the sub - he was like a cog in a machine. I suppose this is how they get men in the military to kill so easily here in the States - treat them like objects & they consequently think of others as nonhuman as well. Perhaps that's what he thought of all those women he slept w/, too. They weren't prostitutes (apparently he never paid for their services), but really easy women hanging out in bars looking for an American man to help them get the hell out of southeast Asia. Anyway, those women he probably saw as objects meant to sexually satisfy him in a more pronounced way than non-military men see women in the society here in the States. In other words, it was an exacerbated culturally learned behaviour... exacerbated by the cruel living conditions he had to endure on that submarine.
Not that that excuses him from his nasty activities one bit, though. I'm going to insert some spine into my girlfriend - she can definitely find someone better for her. I don't care how rich his family is or how sweet he was in high school. He's a different person now, & I don't know if she ever saw him for what he was or what he could do from the beginning, anyway.
