: xxx Anyway, why do YOU *need* to learn Finnish?
+++ 1) I have got to give some lectures in Finland.
Though my Swedish is quite fluent, I think it's indispensable to address my students in their mother tongue to build up an intimate and effective learning atmosphere.
+++ Maybe it's the stupid German drift for politeness and respect for other cultures or some weird push for perfection, anyway, I can't build a personal relationship with any erson whose language, i.e. rhythm of feeling and thinking I don't know and I don't try to learn, at least..
+++ 2) As the co-ordinator for EFFE (European Forum for Freedom in Education) I have to study and to translate the works of our Finnish friends.
Due the extremely special concepts and terminology of EFFE it won't take more time to learn Finnish than to train, instruct and advise our Finnish/German translator/interpreters.
+++ So why not doing it myself?
The language and thinking structure is not so extremely alien to me after having already mastered Turkish and Hungarian for a living job.
+++ Dear Sadie,
please do not misunderstand me:
I am not out to show off, I am only trying to answer your question as fair, honestly and completely as I can - at this time.
+++ But if you feel that my answers sound a bit "alien"and/or "weird" or "in overdrive" to you, you will all the more better understand that's just the reason why I have avoided answering you earlier.
