Sadie, thanks for the website. It is interesting, although it still is in the process of being complete, it would seem. I am not Assyrian, just to let you know in case you didn't already. I just don't want to be misleading anyone- but other than that... It seems to me you maybe didn't know you were from Iraq till recently. Interesting. Did you know about Assyrians or did you only find out once you were a bit older too? I have never been to the western part of the US, except California. I bet Texas can be pretty nice. I'll bet pancho's Mexico desert is nice as well. The only place in Mexico I've been to is Cozumel and Cancun.
: I deciphered a bit of your Spanish in an earlier post. I'm not too good at reading Spanish, but I remember a few of the words my Puerto Rican Spanish teacher in middle school used to scream at our rowdy class... poor thing. : I think everyone on this forum probably already knows more about my family than anything else... But anyway, my dad is Assyrian/Chaldean & my mother is Finnish. Most of my dad's immediate family live in Texas, & many of his cousins live there as well, & in the Northeast U.S., Jordan, Kuwait, perhaps some in Iraq (but I think most of them have moved), England, Sweden, & California.
: Our family lived in Alabama & Tennessee because of my parents' jobs. There were no other Assyrians/Chaldeans around me when I grew up, except when the family went on its annual 2 week pilgrimage to Texas to see the grandparents or when I was sent there for a summer to live with my aunt & uncle while my parents were in France. (Lucky them...) Visiting Houston was like going to one long party... I love being around my dad's family.
: It's weird, because I knew my dad was from Iraq when I was growing up, but he didn't like to speak too much about his past until my sister & I were more mature. I think he was afraid that we'd be subject to discrimination in middle school, esp. during the Gulf War, because we lived in a military town... & you should have seen the way people were talking about "Iraqis." But, now that we are older & perhaps because we are better able to defend ourselves, he answers our questions & educates us on issues.
