If I am correct, the shawm is related to the oboe. I do like the oboe as well, but only if played by someone really good at it, like you say.
I bought my ney from a website a long time ago. It cost me around $160. They had a small, medium, and long ney, but I chose the medium because it seemed to have the nicest and most balanced sound. Their website is still up. In fact, there is a picture of the ney I bought, with a sound clip that goes with it. The website shows only a few of the instruments unfortunately, because I have their catalog at home, and it has so many instruments you wouldn't believe it. Many are very expensive though, and are not on the website, like shawms for $4,495(yikes!). The zurnas are cheaper. I just haven't found the right sounds. I posted the website down below.
If you want to hear a piece of music from the instrument I bought, scroll down on the website till you get to the medium sized ney. You can play a bit.
It is coincidence they happen to have my specific instrument as a sample, same size too. But then again they have a few samples of zurnas too. I am also interested in finding out more about Mizimirs. I do not know much about them. Do you know anything about Mizimirs?
