: I've played the recorder a bit, but I don't know it well. As far as zurnas and shawms, I like the music they produce (specifically one I am trying to find), and therefore want to be able to play it. I love making music, especially with wind instruments. I have a ney. It is the Turkish type, and medium sized. That is the only wind instrument I play right now. I intend to learn the zurna or shawm as well. The ney is not exactly an energetic type of instrument, rather, it is sort of mellow and relaxing. You don't play it like you do a flute or recorder. You tilt the instrument at a 45 degree angle to the right and 45 degree angle downward at the same time. You blow a concentrated air stream sort of sideways into the hole, because if you blow like you would a flute, you will be blowing too hard and won't produce any sound. It is one of the hardest instruments to play, actually. It's relaxing though.
xxx WOW. The ney has such a rich sound, so soothing. From where did you buy yours? & are they expensive? Have you ever heard of Soeur Marie Keyrouz, the singing Maronite nun? There is a piece on one of her CDs (Chant Traditionnel Maronite) that's only instrumental ney, & it is just gorgeous.... I have a tin whistle (in D) & a Native American flute that I play when I'm in the mood to relax, too. The Native American flute has such an odd tuning that it's very challenging to come up with a new melody sometimes. You know, oboes are lovely instruments.... They are my favorite wind instrument if they are played by an expert (otherwise, the sound is too wobbly). Isn't the oboe related to the shawm?
xxx Also, I will respond to your questions below about Saddam later. I'm not in a "thinking" mood outside of work these days - it's more of a "get the hell out of there & enjoy the sunshine" sort of mood. : )
