I have a feeling that the 15-20 counter protesters my sister saw in DC were Kurds. They protested *for* war against Iraq here in Nashville a few weeks ago. I can't blame anyone for hating Saddam, esp. a Kurd., but to hate a tyrannt so much so as to wish another slaughter of hundreds of thousands of innocent people is irrational.

Isn't it horrible that the US gov't tries to force a military solution to this mess? Why is it that the people living in Iraq *must* suffer the consequences of Saddam's & the US government's actions (who helped Saddam into power & armed him, anyway)? I refuse to believe that a massive military campaign that will slaughter so many innocents & further devastate other Iraqi's lives is any sort of action that will benefit the average Iraqi. It is a manipulation, propaganda, to believe that the US gov't acts out of any interest but its own. Of course, Saddam has done some horrible things (& that's a vast understatement) in the past & continues to act as a tyrannt, but that's not anything compared to what the sanctions & the Gulf War have done to Iraq (on behalf of the US gov't) & what sorts of slaughters the US gov't has caused elsewhere. I do not trust the US gov't to do anything that will benefit Iraqis. I will only support a change of gov't in Iraq if it is something that comes from within that country - it is for & by those people who have suffered, not ex-pats (INC) living lavishly off US gov't funds, making grandiose yet empty gestures of "goodwill" toward those who are actually suffering from the compounding effects of sanctions & a shattered infrastructure.

It is one thing to make someone's mind up for him/her, try to have one's way by setting an ultimatum or limited options - to tell someone what to do directly or indirectly - & a completely different thing to allow someone to come to his/her own mind at his/her own pace.

The people of Iraq have suffered & still are suffering. It will take a long time for the country to recover from the assaults it already has faced. I seriously doubt that those ex-pats are thinking about the realities of the condition in Iraq. & if there is another war in Iraq, even if things turn out for the best & civil war does not break out, the effects of a second US military assault will prolong the suffering of the average Iraqi for an even longer time.
