The game is played according to someone else's rules. So long as the Israelis can pose as working for peace and wanting security only...and we act as if we believe that...people like Ms Ashrawi, (who I think know better) are stuck answering gobbledygoop and boxing with shadows.
Her measured response to what needs to be done etc. is a little like a person trying to reason with someone hell bent on killing them in order to eat them. All the good reasons about why you should be spared are being wasted on someone who wants you dead for an entirely different set of reasons.
Got to get back to basics...to redirecting the talk...setting new rules or at the least not pretending that there are rules that apply to both sides or that were agreed upon by both.
Israel can't afford to have peace. Jews take the extra long view...they aren't about to be hemmed in by their present borders...yet they can't appear to be the aggressors. It's one thing to claim you get the land because the bible says so...it's another to take Syria and Lebanon too...far mo better to be seen defending themselves and they can't do that if no one attacks them.
It's like the weapons boys in Iraq now...Bush wants an excuse, and he'll invent one if he has to. For us to have a "serious" dialogue about whether that can of consenced milk could really be filled with cement and dropped from a freeway overpass...and if that constitutes weapons of mass destruction...when you drop a mass of cans...plays into this silliness and clouds our vision, when we need to blink ten times, remove the blinders, step back and take a real look at what is really happening.
Trust me...neither Sharon in Israel nor Bushcroft in the United States can afford peace.
