I had an interesting discussion with my Indian room mate the other day. He went to highschool and had a friend who was 2nd or 3rd, maybe even 4th generation Irish, but the student happened to be the best Irish dancer (riverdance?) in his age class in the world... on this Earth.
Apparently a very organized competition goes on each year, starting at the local level, and moves its way up to the national and even international level. My room mate tells me that the kid was your typical American high school student, the only difference being that he had a serious interest in his culture.
Then I look at my Indian room mate... my Lebanese friend... my polish friend... my armenian friend... all of them born here, speak perfect English, and are "good ole Americans" but with one difference: They all respect and maintain their cultures. Whether it's with the arts, language, or just being aware of who they are and not begging the white man to join his club, they all do a great job.
Why can't we do the same? I don't mean to sound like a pessimist... I have found plenty of people in our community who can and do respect who they are, but they are few and far between. My question is...why is that?
