I've played the recorder a bit, but I don't know it well. As far as zurnas and shawms, I like the music they produce (specifically one I am trying to find), and therefore want to be able to play it. I love making music, especially with wind instruments. I have a ney. It is the Turkish type, and medium sized. That is the only wind instrument I play right now. I intend to learn the zurna or shawm as well. The ney is not exactly an energetic type of instrument, rather, it is sort of mellow and relaxing. You don't play it like you do a flute or recorder. You tilt the instrument at a 45 degree angle to the right and 45 degree angle downward at the same time. You blow a concentrated air stream sort of sideways into the hole, because if you blow like you would a flute, you will be blowing too hard and won't produce any sound. It is one of the hardest instruments to play, actually. It's relaxing though.
