Though the sanctions should be lifted & the oil-for-food program made obsolete over time, the problem is that the U.S. government only wants these things to occur so that it can gain faster access to oil revenues, itself. The U.S. government doesn't seem to mind that taking away the oil-for-food program, a necessary crutch in this recovery period, would most likely cause more malnutrition, trauma, & internal strife. After this attack, how many people in Iraq are fully capable of starting work again? Instead, the U.S. government should pay reparations for the damage it caused in Iraq since the Gulf War. The U.S. should also pull out its troops & use some of that huge military budget to fund Iraqi reparations. Iraqi oil money should go into funding the upkeep of national educational, welfare, & health care systems, after the rebuilding is complete, especially since so many were injured in this last aggression against the country.

How can anyone expect Iraqi society to just pick up & carry on as if nothing had happened to them?

It's the U.S. government's "laissez faire" *outward* political policy of leaving a bad situation alone, letting that situation continue to worsen as the global rich take advantage of the situation. Underneath that deceptively simple "laissez faire" policy are many active agents pulling the strings just right to ensure that money, stripped from the people, gets funnelled into the bank accounts of the already disgustingly wealthy.

Just my opinion.
