Notes made during Dr. Hanan Ashrawi's talk at Vanderbilt University, December 4, 2002:
1.) There needs to be strategic dialogue between the parties involved in the Israeli-Palestinian situation, something that lays down steps. There needs to be a *mechanism* to reach statehood for the Palestinians, through which the abstract can be made concrete.
2.) However, conditionality & sequencing can always play into the hands of the strong. Therefore, the peace process needs a new dynamic, a new logic in order to proceed.
3.) One can not superimpose the spirit of revolution on the process of nation building. (Does this make sense, or do I have to clarify that statement)?
Otherwise, the points she made were similar to the points she's made in other speeches. Went to a reception afterward & got 2 autographs from her. It was hard to talk to her, as some hysterical older lady was constantly interrupting Dr. Ashrawi's conversations w/ other people, showing her pictures of her family & getting
A group of students handed out flyers that attempted to smear Dr. Ashrawi to people entering the auditorium, & several pro-Israeli-right students framed their questions in malicious ways in the question-and-answer session that followed, but Dr. Ashrawi pointed out how trivial & pointless their questions were...
